    White Elephant Wheel

Add a twist to your white elephant or Yankee swap: spin the wheel on each turn to decide whether you open, steal or swap, and use a second wheel to set the turn order.

What is the white elephant wheel?

The white elephant wheel is a free online spinner loaded with 8 starter entries, such as Open a new gift, Steal a gift, Swap with left, Swap with right. You can change every slice, add your own items, set odds and keep a record of each result. People also search for it as “white elephant spinner”, “yankee swap wheel”, “gift swap game wheel”.

The appeal is visibility. Nobody has to trust a hidden algorithm, because the options and the spin are right there for the whole group.

Tips for the white elephant wheel

    • Spin the turn order first with a name wheel and elimination.
    • Limit steals to three per gift.
    • Weight 'Steal' lower if your group is competitive.

    Classic white elephant rules

Everyone brings one wrapped gift within the agreed budget and puts it in the pile. Players take turns in a random order. On your turn you can open a new gift from the pile or steal an opened gift from someone else. If your gift is stolen, you choose again: open a new gift or steal a different one. Most groups add two limits: a gift can only be stolen three times before it's "frozen", and you can't immediately steal back a gift that was just taken from you. The game ends when every gift has been opened.

    Where the wheel comes in

The wheel replaces the decision on each turn with a spin. Instead of always choosing between opening and stealing, the player spins and follows the result: open a new gift, steal a gift, swap with the person on the left or right, pass, or a group action such as "everyone passes their gift left". The randomness stops the game from becoming a series of predictable steals of the one gift everyone wants, and it gives shy players an excuse to steal without feeling mean.

    Setting the turn order

Before the gift wheel, spin a name wheel with elimination on to decide the turn order. Each name drops off as it's picked, so everyone gets exactly one turn. Write the order on a board or keep the history visible. Some groups give the first player a bonus final turn at the end, since they had no gifts to steal from at the start.

    Balancing the wheel

If your group loves chaos, add more steal and swap slices. If you want a calmer game with more unwrapping, give "Open a new gift" the biggest weight. Group actions like "everyone passes left" are fun but disruptive, so keep them at a low weight. Check the percentage column before the party so you know roughly how often each action will happen.

Gift ideas that suit the game

The best white elephant gifts are useful, funny or both: a quirky mug, a board game, fancy hot chocolate, a houseplant, a puzzle, novelty socks, a book, a desk gadget. Set a clear budget so gifts feel fair, and agree whether gag gifts are allowed. For office parties, keep gifts work-appropriate.

    Variations

Yankee swap is another name for the same game. Dirty Santa adds more aggressive stealing. A themed swap limits gifts to a category, such as books, mugs or snacks from your home country. A "re-gift" version has everyone bring something unwanted from home, which is cheap and often hilarious.

    Example

A team of fourteen spins its turn order, then spins the action wheel for each turn. The coveted coffee grinder changes hands three times before being frozen, and the person who ends up with it has to give a short speech about how they won it.

Odds on the white elephant wheel

With equal weights each of the 8 entries has a 12.5% chance on every spin. Change a weight and that entry's chance becomes its weight divided by the total. Elimination removes winners and recalculates the odds for the rest. Test any setup on the randomness audit.
