What is the random team generator?

The random team generator splits a whole list into balanced teams at once. Team sizes never differ by more than one person.

Optional rules let you keep two people apart (A != B) or together (A + B). The generator reshuffles until every rule is met.

How to use the random team generator

1

Paste names, one per line.

2

Choose Number of teams or People per team, and enter the value.

3

Optionally add rules: A != B to keep apart, A + B to keep together.

4

Press Generate teams. Press it again for a different split.

Balanced teams without awkward picking

Picking teams by hand is slow and can be unkind, because someone is always chosen last. A random team generator fixes both problems: it's instant and impersonal. This one shares out the whole list so team sizes never differ by more than one person.

Real groups often need a few rules. Write 'Ava != Liam' to keep two people on different teams, which is useful for splitting up close friends or strong players. Write 'Mia + Omar' to keep people together, such as siblings or a carpool. The generator reshuffles until every rule is met, or tells you if the rules are impossible.

Ticking Mark captains labels the first member of each team as captain, a quick way to give each group a leader. Results use an unbiased shuffle with cryptographic randomness.

Tips for fair teams in different settings

In sport and PE, random teams remove the social pain of being picked last, but skill imbalance can still happen. Use keep-apart rules for your strongest players so they land on different teams, then let the shuffle handle everyone else.

In classrooms, mixing groups helps students work with new people. Keep-apart rules can separate pairs who distract each other, while keep-together rules support students who need a buddy. Regenerate groups for each project so everyone works with a range of classmates over the term.

At work, random breakout groups spread ideas across teams and departments. For hackathons, combine rules: keep each team's designers apart so every team gets one. When rules get complex, add them gradually and check the generator can still satisfy them.

Troubleshooting rules

If the generator says your rules can't be met, look for conflicts. Keeping A with B while also keeping B apart from A is impossible. So is keeping five people together when teams only hold four. Too many keep-apart rules can also leave no valid arrangement for small teams.

Start with the most important rules, generate, then add others one at a time. If you only have two teams, remember that a chain of keep-apart rules (A apart from B, B from C, C from A) can't work, because three people can't all be on different teams when there are only two.

Once you have a split you're happy with, copy it into your chat or slide straight away, so nobody can ask for a regeneration because they'd prefer a different team.

Key terms explained

Constraint

A rule such as keep-apart or keep-together that every valid split must follow.

Balanced split

Teams whose sizes differ by no more than one person.

Captain

A team member chosen to lead, here the first name in each shuffled team.

Breakout group

A small group formed for a short discussion or task.

Ideas for balanced groups

Mix new and experienced members by listing them in two batches and generating teams from each. Use the keep-apart rule for siblings or best friends who distract each other, and keep-together for pairs who need support, such as a language buddy. For recurring groups, regenerate weekly so everyone works with different people over a term. Display the result on screen so teams can find each other quickly.
