    Random Name Picker

A random name picker turns a list of people into a spinning wheel and picks one at random. Paste names from a spreadsheet, a class register or a chat, and the wheel takes care of fair selection.

What is the random name picker?

The random name picker is a free online spinner loaded with 12 starter entries, such as Ava, Liam, Noah, Emma. You can change every slice, add your own items, set odds and keep a record of each result. People also search for it as “random name picker wheel”, “random name picker from list”, “random name picker no repeats”.

Think of it as a digital prize wheel: you see every option, watch the pointer slow down, and get a clear result that is logged automatically.

Pick who reads, answers or presents next without anyone feeling singled out.

    Choosing a volunteer

Select a note-taker, host or first speaker in a meeting.

    Prize draws

Pick a winner from a list of entrants on screen so everyone sees the result.

    Turn order

Run the picker with Elimination on to build a random order for a game or presentations.

Tips for the random name picker

    • Use Remove Duplicates before you spin if names came from a form.
    • Turn on Elimination for a no-repeat order.
    • Set Multiple Winners to pick several names in one round.

Examples of lists people pick from

Teachers paste class registers to choose who answers or reads aloud. Coaches load squads to pick captains or penalty takers. Offices use team names for meeting roles, raffle prizes and the weekly "who buys the coffee" draw. Families fill it with relatives for gift exchanges, games and chore rotas. Event hosts load ticket holders or attendees to choose prize winners on stage. Streamers paste chat usernames for giveaways. Any list of people, one per line, becomes a fair draw in seconds.

Three ways to run a name draw

Single pick: spin once and announce the name. This is best for quick decisions such as who goes first. Running order: turn on automatic removal so each name drops off after it's picked, and spin until the list is empty. This is best for presentation order or turn-taking. Several winners at once: set the number of winners and spin once to draw a group without repeats. This is best for prize bundles, volunteers or small teams.

    Getting the list right

Most problems with name pickers come from the list rather than the spin. Check for duplicates before you start; the Dedupe option collapses repeated names even if their capitals or spacing differ. If two people share a first name, add an initial so each slice is unique. Hide absent people rather than deleting them, so tomorrow's list is ready. For long lists, keep names short so they stay readable on the wheel; the result popup always shows the full name.

    Party and event ideas

Lucky seat: put attendees' names on the wheel and draw a surprise prize between speeches. Hot seat: at a birthday or leaving party, spin for who has to share a funny story about the guest of honour. Karaoke queue: spin for the next singer and remove them once they've sung. Quiz host: rotate the question-reader role with each round. Mystery partner: spin twice to pair people for a dance, game or icebreaker.

    Picking fairly over time

A random picker is fair on every spin, but over a few weeks some names may come up more than others. If balance matters, switch on Fair Rotation, which gives names that haven't been picked recently a slightly bigger chance. Or use a cooldown so a name can't come up again for a set number of spins. Both keep the draw random while spreading turns more evenly, and they're easy to explain to a group.

    When results matter

For prize draws and anything people might question, show the list on screen first, let the spin finish, and download a receipt. The receipt records the names, settings and result with a fingerprint, so you can show later that nothing was changed.

    Odds you control

Change any entry's weight and its slice resizes to match its chance.

    No-repeat and multi-winner

Remove winners automatically, or draw a whole set in one round.

    Images, colours, sound

Pictures on slices, custom colours, tick and fanfare sounds.

    Share, fullscreen, OBS

Send a link, project it, or put it on stream as an overlay.

    History and receipts

Every spin is logged with a time and code. Export it to CSV.

Odds on the random name picker

With equal weights each of the 12 entries has a 8.3% chance on every spin. Change a weight and that entry's chance becomes its weight divided by the total. Elimination removes winners and recalculates the odds for the rest. Test any setup on the randomness audit.

    Random name picker FAQs

Can the random name picker avoid repeats?

Yes. Turn on Elimination in Design and each picked name is removed from the wheel automatically.

How many names can I add?

Hundreds work smoothly. Labels shrink to fit, and very long lists stay readable in the side list.

Can I paste names from Excel or Google Sheets?

Copy a column and paste it into the entries box. Each cell becomes one slice.

Is the random name picker free?

Yes. The random name picker on WheelSpinner is free, with no sign-up or entry limit.

Is the random name picker truly random?

Each spin uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so with equal weights every visible entry has the same chance.

Can I save and share my random name picker?

Entries save automatically in this browser, and Share copies a link with your list included.
